Photo essay: Winter in Deventer (2021)
The Wandelgek always feels like he’s a tourist in his own home town, which, listening to other people’s reactions, is not a common feeling. So let me explain a bit more.
After his arrival in Deventer, for study purposes (The Wandelgek studied for becoming a Librarian), he lived here for 4 years and although he thought the town was beautiful and there were good pubs, he thought of moving away after study to a location where he would find work. But then, due to an economic crises (we’re talking about the end of the 80’s and the 1st half of the 99’s of the previous century now, something rather important changed in the way Deventer utilized its historic, medieval center. The 1st noticeable sign of this new wind was the creation of a car free Brink square and a 2nd important change was the financial support for a quite large amount of festivals in the city center, like e.g.: The Dickens Festijn, Op den Berghe (a medieval festival), The Deventer Book Market, Deventer on Stilts (an outdoor theater festival), The Garden Festival (A poetry and music festival), and many more smaller festivals of which music festivals like Tour de Terras, Irish Pub Festival, Hoogtevrees, Muziek Totaal and nowadays de Deventer Popronde are fantastic festivals to attract inhabitants, students and tourists of all ages and even from foreign countries to the medieval town center.
For The Wandelgek these were the main reasons to change his view on where he wanted to live and from then on he chose work which could be reached from Deventer and stayed there.
On this blogsite he mostly posts about his travels abroad, but now there is time for a new blogpost on Deventer, which will show you his photo’s of the medieval town center and its surroundings during the winter of 2021, because we do not get winters like that very often anymore.
Enjoy if you already live here and otherwise these photo’s might stimulate a future visit!
