44. Greenland: Last dinner in Greenland and leaving for Copenhagen
With still a few hours left in Greenland, The Wandelgek was invited to a free dinner by his travel agent. This was not just a quick dinner. No this was a luxureous dinner offer! The Wandelgek received free vouchers for dinner and for all the drinks as well (Wine and beer can be very expensive in Greenland).
A wonderful old Canadian schoolbus ….
….was chartered for transport from the airport to restaurant Roklubben at a beautiful blue lake named Ferguson Lake somewhere behind Raven Hill…
The restaurant was on the lake’s shore and there were only a handfull of houses scattered along its south shore…
Dinner was a 3 stage dinner with a starter, a main course and a desert…
This was real Greenlandic haute cuisine…
Looking out of the window, it seemed almost unreal that in a few hours, The Wandelgek would leave on a plane to Denmark.
But after a fantastic dinner like this and some delicious Greenlandic beer, it was time to finally go to the airport.
On the last drive, around Raven hill, towards Kangerlussuaq airport, The Wandelgek soaked up the views like a bath tub sponge…
Then what followed was a last wait at the airport, checking in my luggage at the counter and checking in myself.
At about 23.30 the airplane and The Wandelgek finally left Greenland, travelling towards Copenhagen 1st.
Conclusion: Greenland had all that I expected of it. It is a wilderness tarnished with a thin layer of western culture, but you need not scratch hard to completely lose that varnish and be in the Wild.
I loved everything about it: It’s rough, rocky landscape, its delicate arctic nature and beautiful wildlife (specificly the many whales), its unpredictable weather, seeing the hard way of life up here and most of all seeing the enormous crushing strength of the breathtaking ice during the brief arctic summer. It is absolutely a country where I would love to return.
